Why Keep Danios? Print E-mail

With all the fish available in the aquarium trade, why would anyone want to keep Danios?

Well for starters, they have been a staple of aquarists since the inception of the hobby. As Dr. William T. Innes stated in 1938 when speaking of the Zebra Danio, "Of the various small egg-layers this fish is, no doubt, the most permanently popular, and with good reason."

Now I have not been able to find when Danios first entered the hobby, but if they had been "permanently popular" by 1938, one can only assume that aquarists had been keeping them for quite some time.

In addition to having a long history with the hobby, most Danios have all the attributes that make for a great aquarium fish;
  • They are very peaceful.
  • They do not outgrow a small aquarium.
  • They are aggressive eaters and will accept all types of food.
  • Most are relatively easy to breed.

Danios are also well suited as a "dither fish".  In this roll they can be used as peacemakers to keep other aggressive fish from fighting, or to bring hiding fish out into the open.
