Danio kyathit is yet another newcomer from the country of Myanmar. First described in 1998 by Fang, she called them kyathit as this is the Myanmar word for leopard in referance to the spotted variety of the fish.
The Orange Finned Danio is the striped version of Danio kyathit, while the Ocelot Danio is the spotted version of Danio kyathit.
First Experience
I first acquired my Orange Finned Danios back in the spring of 2009. I purchased them on-line at Aqua-Bid. At the time, Pete Mang, the seller of the auction these fish were listed in, wasn’t exactly sure what these fish were, so they were simply called “those other HOT Danios in the bottom photo!“.
These fish turned out to be very easy to spawn. So easy in fact that I never really set them up in a breeder tank. I simply fed them lots of high quality foods and some live and frozen foods and then started saving the water in buckets when I would do a gravel vacuum of their tank. It wasn’t long before fry started showing up in the buckets of water.
Here’s a short video of some of the F1 fry from back in 2011…..
When they are happy and healthy, they are simply spectacular looking fish. Their bright red fins contrasting nicely with their metallic velvety blue bodies.
Of all the Danios I’ve kept, I believe these fish school the best. They form tight groups when kept in larger tanks and make a very pleasing display.
